Geschiedenis ‘De Pijp’
De nieuwe wijk die achter het Paleis van Volksvlijt verrees rond 1900, heette officieel Buurt YY, maar kreeg al snel de naam De Pijp. De nieuwe wijk ontwikkelde zich al snel tot een bruisend stadsdeel. Verschillende bekende Nederlandse schrijvers huurden hier een kamer, zoals Herman Heijermans, Frederik van Eeden en Bordewijk. In de Pijp werd de grondslag voor het Nederlandse cabaret gelegd door Eduard Jacobs. Al snel stond de wijk dan ook bekend als het ‘Quartier Latin’ van Amsterdam en die reputatie heeft het nog steeds. André Hazes heeft hier altijd gezongen en hij is dan ook vereeuwigd middels een standbeeld aan de Albert Cuyp.
Over de betekenis van de (bij)naam De Pijp gaan verschillende verhalen. In 1892 werd De Pijp met een pijpenla vergeleken waarin lange, brede pijpen liggen, welke 's morgens vroeg levende wolken mensen op weg naar hun werk uitbliezen. Hoe onduidelijk de oorsprong van de naam ook is, iedereen spreekt nu over De Pijp en iedereen wil er graag wonen.

History of De Pijp
The new neighbourhood that arose behind the Paleis voor Volksvlijt around 1900 was officially known as District YY, but soon became known as De Pijp. The area quickly developed into a vibrant part of the city.
Several well-known Dutch writers rented rooms here, including Herman Heijermans, Frederik van Eeden and Bordewijk. De Pijp was also where Eduard Jacobs laid the foundations for Dutch cabaret. The neighbourhood soon became known as the “Quartier Latin” of Amsterdam, a reputation it retains to this day. Famous Amsterdam singer André Hazes regularly performed here and has been immortalised with a statue at the Albert Cuyp Market.
There are several stories about the origin of the name De Pijp. In 1892, the neighbourhood was compared to a long pipe from which, early in the morning, living “clouds” of people were blown out on their way to work. Whatever the true origin of the name may be, today everyone knows De Pijp – and it remains one of Amsterdam’s most desirable places to live.
